The N that Inspired it all…

My letter for this project was N. I found this letter in multiple places around the school as there is an N in the word Fleming. What I was most interested in on my adventure through the school; looking for my letter, was the different measures of accessibility I saw. Thus for this project, I dived into what accessibility means to Fleming College.

Fleming College, Peterborough ON campus

From my research, I found that Fleming College understands that each student is an individual with unique needs, strengths, and goals. Fleming strives to improve the accessibility of the college environment for all students to have a positive and equal learning experience. Fleming follows the Accessibility of Ontarians with Disabilities Act, whose goals include removing barriers and achieving accessibility for persons with disabilities. Fleming College helps those with learning disabilities, including AD/HD, Asperger’s syndrome, nonverbal learning disabilities, autism spectrum disorders, blind or low vision, deaf or hard of hearing, physical and medical disabilities, and acquired brain injuries. Fleming also caters towards helping gender, race and socioeconomic background members of the community.

Students using technology aids to help with homework

To help these individuals to succeed Fleming offers a multitude of services. These services are free, confidential and voluntary. Fleming academic accommodations that are available to students in need include access to technical aids (assistive equipment and software), computerized note-taking for those with sight or hearing disabilities, an alternative to print materials and testing arrangements, sign language interpretation, counseling support, and a full-time learning strategist and assistive technologist for students. Undoubtedly Fleming is dedicated to each of their students to have the best learning experience as possible and I am happy to attend such a college.
